A few weeks back, I took a little trip in the time machine, writing about memories and sharing photos that showed what we had been up to in the month of August, exactly one year prior. Well I sat down to begin the September 2010 recap but couldn't find any photos taken during this month. Quite surprising really, as my camera rarely gets a week off. So curious, I then looked in the September 2009 file, just because I wanted to establish if a pattern was emerging (maybe September was going to be our off month on a yearly basis), and voila! Beautiful happy memories jumped right off the computer screen; photos of an exclusive event, experienced in an extraordinary location, and in the company of very special friends. I felt a little pang of sadness for a few seconds (oh we MISS our dear friends), but then I felt myself smiling from ear to ear as I recalled how much fun we'd had at the Eskimo River Boat Regatta.
Our hosts, Kristy and John, were the masters of origami who trained us well in the art of boat construction. We had boats in all the colours of the rainbow. John carefully lined them all up at the starting line, with the kids over-seeing his every move to ensure no one got an unfair advantage - not an easy task! Once they were set free we'd walked along beside the river cheering on our boats. Some had needed rescuing from becoming snagged on logs, rocks and leaf matter, others just became soggy and sank. One did make it to the finish line and continued on a journey further down the river, never to be seen again.
The get-together also included a BBQ dinner and a famous 'Annie's' ice-cream cake. I think we may have ended this action-packed day back at our host family's abode for a campfire too. What a great day it was - and how thankful I am for such great friends and memories!!
