all-a-flutter

Ben took these photos of butterflies visiting our yard recently. They always visit when he's home alone and never come by when I'm around. I've been waiting and wanting to take photos of them for quite some time but alas, they prefer Ben's company. I'm a little envious. That aside, aren't they lovely photos!

Stop using my camera when I'm not home Ben!!!!!!

.....just kidding!

PS Not sure if they are butterflies or moths, but those little mauve winged creatures (the ones enjoying our weeds in the above photo), well they are so sweet and very small and very difficult to photograph. Hmmmm...if only I had a macro! Is it time to get another lens?

the fig thieves

Mmmmm figs. I don't know about you, but I love them!
Those pesky birds do leave enough for us, luckily!

Ben got a new toy...a GoPro camera. Here's a little video he put together of our favourite place in the whole world!!!!!!!! Enjoy.

chicken little no more

Introducing the newest girls in the chook pen (which by the way, means we now provide lodging for 17 hens!!!!). Ben asked me to take some photos of our sweet little egg-layers-to-be when they first arrived, at just a day old they were particularly endearing. I never got around to it, somehow I was too busy taking photos of um, well, you know - hoses and such. I finally got around to climbing into the pen the other day, though Ben was of the opinion they'd outgrown their cuteness! I don't know, they still are pretty sweet to me, and awfully photogenic!

Heidi Spidey

Many years ago we had a magnet on our fridge with an illustration of a spider on it. Underneath the picture were the words "Heidi Spidey'. The magnet is long gone, but since that time, all spiders have been known (now and forever) by that name (in the world according to me). You know how that sort of thing works.

I like spiders, honest. I never squash them. I think that's why we have so many living on our verandah right now - word on the street is - live at Michelle's, she's cool, she won't wreck your web! Plus there's home-delivery!!! Yep, Ben even feeds them. Truly, every cockroach caught is thoughtfully placed in a web. Heidi rubs her belly whenever she sees Ben coming. A free meal - it's no wonder they like our place.

I'm not exaggerating when I say there are webs between every single post! I kid you not, there are webs on webs...on webs. I think they are beautiful and intricate and just plain fascinating. We don't normally let it get this out of control. The painters are meant to be coming to give our rental a face-lift. I figure once they show up, it will be goodbye Heidi Spidey for a while (rumour is...they're going to attack the outside walls with a high pressure hose - eeek!)

Apologies to all the spider phobics....the flower shots are there for you to focus on! xx

PS I'm not responsible for Heidi Spidey's (AKA The Golden Orb) missing leg.

Just flew in!

Here are the newest members of our family. They arrived on the plane this Tuesday night from Queensland. For now they are living comfortably in a cardboard box in the lounge-room until they are old enough to join the big girls in the chook house up the back!

WHAT is THAT SMELL???

We woke one morning this week to a VERY BAD smell. A truly foul, toe-curling, put-you-off-your-food, stomach turning odour! With our hounds-tooth hats and magnifying glasses we set off in search. Something had to be done, and quickly. Heading along the hallway, it became apparent the aroma was oozing from the spare bedroom where Harry and Till sleep most of the time (their own bedrooms reserved purely for ornamental purposes!). On investigation of the room, and relieved it wasn't our children rotting overnight, our noses led us to the en-suite bathroom...where the smell was unbearable!!!!! After sniffing profusely over every inch of this tiny room, we couldn't pin the smell down. We wondered if it was in the wall cavity....or perhaps it was floating up through the drain? I wondered if the toilet was leaking? Frustrated and appalled we shut the door tight and went off to work,  praying the smell wouldn't permeate the entire house.

A day later with the smell growing stronger we tried every trick in the book to deal with it; bleach down the drain, candles burning, vinegar and bi-carb splashed liberally. Even with two doors closed between us and the smell, it still drifted down the hallway torturing us. At what point was this going to end???? Were we going to have to move out?

Finally today, with time on our side, Ben decided to explore under the house. His theory being that Mr Rat (or Mr DEAD Rat should I say) was wholly responsible for stinking out our normally fresh smelling abode. Ben suited up in old clothes, including "hair protection" and a "breathing apparatus" and courageously headed for the door/gate that leads to the foundations of our house; a filthy spider infested place where you'd never find me in a million years.  Thank goodness for brave husbands I say! After crawling under the house armed with torch and plastic bag, he bravely shuffled into the tiny space between the ground below and the floor above. With groans of disgust and grunts of contortion, Ben did come upon that feral rotting smell as expected, half decaying and maggot infested of course. All the while I stood in the safe distance of the door throwing words of encouragement and asking for updates on the situation! That was helpful of me don't you think?

Armed and ready....Ben goes under the house!

Ha - FOUND YOU, Mr Rat!

Can you guess what's in the bag?
So now the smell has been "dealt with" and the aroma restored to rights. And just in the nick of time as we have some friends from Oz arriving on Monday to stay with us a week. We were starting to despair as to where we were going to sleep them!!!!!!

Chicken Envy

Ben was checking on our chickens (and one duck) when he discovered one of the horses standing in the chook yard, trying to look inconspicuous and not TOO guilty. He wasn't drawing much attention to himself really and the hens didn't seem to mind at all. Coaxing him out wasn't too hard. All it took was the whiff of a few over-sized carrots from the veggie patch. Ben then promptly set to work repairing the fence, under the watchful eyes of both the offending horse and the other horse who shares his paddock (but who displays better paddock etiquette).  I think the chickens thought the whole caper quite amusing. I certainty did!

There ain't nobody here but us chickens!

Ooooo...is that a carrot? I do rather like carrots. But do chickens eat carrots?
Oh, help, what would a chicken do? I'm so confused.

Bugger - now we'll never cross the road!

Hmmm...that Ben fellow sure doesn't know much about building sturdy fences!
