Less rubbish :: Tip #1

Well here is my first tip.  Gosh I know you've all been waiting with bated breath.

Ditch the bin liner! - it's just added plastic and not really necessary

We no longer put plastic garbage bag liners in our bin (both indoor & outdoor bins).  It sounds messy, and now and then it is.  All our food scraps end up in the compost heap, or in the chook yard.  So really, the rubbish in our bin is mostly clean. If the bin gets a bit sticky, I give it a quick swoosh-out with water and washing-up detegent and leave it in the sun to dry. Too easy.

PS.  Maybe where you live, compostable garbage bags are available.  We don't have them here.  But even if they were on offer I'd avoid buying them. I'm always mindful of what precious resources are needed to produce such a luxury.

Hi Michelle...confession time...when I first read this, my initial reaction was "ouch, couldn't you have started with something a bit...well nicer...perhaps cleaner...not such a sacrifice??!!!" Maybe make a slice instead of buying muesli bars for the kids morning tea. But the more I think about it, it is actually a good place to start...start reducing rubbish, at the rubbish bin!! Also I think, while it is true, that it is convenient to have a bin liner, that we,also have chickens and guinea pigs and a dog who between them finish off any left overs. So I guess it is a matter of changing habits. Learning to think differently. Another thought I had is, when I am tempted to think this is hard, or gross or inconvenient...that it is also all of that and more (the rubbish) when it leaves my house...and goes off on its next journey! This is just my two cents worth (just so you don't feel like you are speaking into a vacuum!)

Ha ha - I think you must be the only person reading any of this anyway!!! But you hit the nail on the head Deb....rubbish is gross and messy and smelly, and that's before it even leaves our homes! Thanks for your support. I think maybe I'm too controversial for my own good.

What do others think? Do you have any ideas worth sharing?
