weekly stills

We had a school swimming carnival this week for which I snapped 1300 photos!!!! Add to that all the photos I'm taking for an online photography course I'm enrolled in, and well....needless to say, I've been working my camera HARD!

(i) fig-a-licious
(ii) a darn bird enjoyed this one!
(iii) videoing the photographer....can you spot me?
(iv) where did you pop up from Miss Till?
(v) figs again, drying in the dehydrator
(vi) we moved the bookshelf from one room to another
(vii) "we'll help to move the books Mum!"
(viii) there's been a lot of drawing 'round here lately
(ix) those strawberry blonde eyelashes....unique
(x) hmmmm...do you think we should paint the table?

I know, figs featured heavily this week. They have been consuming me (and vice versa) somewhat. I made my very first batch of fig jam and fig conserve (I didn't even know what the difference was until this week). Who knew jam making was so easy and satisfying!!!!!

in my garden: part 1

I'm not a gardener, although I wish I was. Yes, the plants fend for themselves around here. They seem happy enough!

ten random things

On this lovely Sunday morning I'm joining Kate from Foxs Lane and sharing ten random tidbits of information about my life right now. If you have a moment, drop by Kate's blog. It's hands-down one of my favourites! Kate is a wise, practical, thoughtful lady with a bucket load of skills. Her photos alone will draw you in, I promise!

one

I just read the most wonderful, imaginative, magical, bizarre (seriously) book to Harry and Matilda. Published in the 1970's, The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is a novel written by none other than Dame Julie Andrews, although the book is published under her married name, Julie Edwards.  It's a tale of courage, risk-taking and persistence. My children loved every minute of the story, as did I. Next on our list of "read alouds" is either The Animals of Farthing Wood or The Borrowers.

two

Big changes for me this year. I'm no longer working full time. You can't imagine what this means to me, I have so many plans and a list of 'Must-Do's' as long as my arm. Ordinarily I don't mention my work here, I prefer to keep my personal and professional life separate. But this is such a positive change for me and my family, so how can I not let you in.  And here's the best bit, Ben and I are job sharing! Yep, two teachers, same school, one class. Ours together. Cool huh.

three

Being a part-timer, I'm totally making sure I get my craft groove on this year. That is, as soon as I put all the cupboards to rights. When I can find my way through the linen press, I'm dusting off the sewing machine and raiding the craft books. I started this week with two of the worst cupboards: under the kitchen sink and the laundry cupboard. At least I'll be crafting in good conscience soon!!!

four

I started this blog a few years ago mainly to keep family in the loop, but as it turns out, it's strangers (who now feel like friends) who drop in, follow along or leave me comments. You inspire me to keep blogging and I really appreciate you all! Let's face it, anyone writing a blog hopes that someone out there is reading!

five

A friend loaned us her ThermoChef, it's just like a ThermoMix. Boy have we fallen in love. This bit of kitchen gear does everything and quite frankly we don't want to give it back! With ease and sophistication the ThermoChef weighs, chops, cooks, blends, steams, boils, purees, kneads....and cleans itself. Nah, just kidding. BUT, it is very simple to clean. So far we've used it to make meringue, custard, rice, boiled eggs (yeah, yeah...how hard is it to boil an egg?), soup, beetroot dip, more soup, corn fritters, hot chocolate, fish and veg, mushroom risotto, meat loaf...oh and more soup.  Today I'm going to make fig jam à la carte ThermoChef style. Wish me luck, I've never ever made jam before!

six

Speaking of figs, our enormous tree is providing a bountiful harvest this year. We do battle with the birds most days despite Ben netting a small part of the tree (they still find a way in). I wouldn't mind if they just feasted on the figs up high, but the naughty scavengers even nibble on those within my reach!

seven

My parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this year. That's quite an achievement wouldn't you agree? I've been thinking a lot about marriage lately, mostly how great it is and how lucky I am to have such a wonderful husband. At Christmas time when I was home at Mum and Dad's, I tried my wedding dress on and Ben took some photos - talk about a trip down memory lane. My Mum thinks she might put hers on this year and take some photos too!

eight

Our family is planning a return trip to New Zealand this Winter. I know what you're thinking, WINTER! Well we survived NZ's cold last year and even got to ski. We will be meeting up with some mates from Oz and together we plan to motor-home our way around the South Island.  I can't wait!!!! Cold weather and all.

nine

We always write messages to each other on the blackboard attached to the wall on our verandah. I was cleaning off Happy Valentines Day yesterday when Matilda suggested we write Happy Easter. Give me break kid, I'm still getting over Christmas. You gotta love her enthusiasm. And I hate to admit it, Easter will be here before we know it.

ten

Oh Matilda. You are a little testing at the moment. I'm not sure why exactly, perhaps you're having a growth spurt? Or maybe it's because you're finding your feet in year 3. You did crack me up the other night though, when you arrived at the dinner table with a fake nose ring stuck on your face. Good grief. What will the teenage years be like??

NB. A blog post about random things wouldn't really be complete without a few random photos too! All of these were taken back in January during our visit to our nations capital city, Canberra. Have I told you how much I love Canberra?

See you soon for Weekly Stills x

week-ending

Emily Bay: the perfect location for us to hang-out and reconnect with each other after a big week. You might say this was one of those perfect Friday afternoons!

I took all these photos in manual mode using my nifty fifty lens. Manual is my go-to mode these days. I still get home and upload tonnes of dud photos but the better ones are coming thick and fast. I learn something new every time I pick up my camera. My photography savvy cousin sent me a picture on FB today that said:

Photography is not my whole life, but it makes my life whole!

So true.

give it a rest

I'm all for taking good care of my clothes and I take washing (but NOT ironing) pretty seriously. I don't have an extensive collection of clothing, a lot of what I own I've scoured from op shops or garage sales. I purchase some new good quality items once in a while and I always launder them carefully. A bit of gentle bucket hand washing never hurt anyone I say. I find it strangely satisfying!

Being the environmentally conscious gal that I am, I want my clothes to see the distance. To assist this I follow all the generally known rules like "the colour rule" (although it should really be a law): wash whites and colours separately, the fade rule: darks inside out so when they are on the line they don't fade, oh and the zip /button one: always zip the zippers and button the buttons so the garment doesn't stretch or catch on other clothing etc.

BUT...just this week I learnt a new rule and I have to share! Are you ready?
Let your bra rest between wears!!!

I'm not cuckoo. Hear me out.

Apparently one should never wear their brasierre two days in a row. Did you know that?? I certainly didn't (remember I am living on an island). You see, the clothing laundry experts, whoever they are, say after you wear your bra for one day, you should let it rest for at least 24 hours before you wear it again. This is so the elastic has a chance to spring back to it's original state! Huh. Well I'll be. Did your Nanna ever tell you that?

So no more wearing the same bra two days in a row ladies. And I confess, there have been times when I've don that over-the-shoulder-you-know-what THREE DAYS IN A ROW. But rest assured (no pun intended) my bras are now being afforded the proper respect they deserve. Yes, my bras are resting! And you need to make sure yours does too. OK.

I promise your bra's will stay in shape much longer and that will save you some dosh. I don't know about you, but I hate bra shopping! I usually wear them until they're thread bare. When they finally fall apart in my hands, I drag my sorry self to the bra section, cajole myself through the hunt for the right size, shape and style and shuffle myself to the change room to wrestle into the stiff, immalleable, starched unfriendly strangling device to investigate its suitability. And don't get me started on those wretched coat hangers - that tangled chaotic mess almost has me running for the shoe section (and I enjoy shoe shopping even less than bra shopping). Sheesh, bra shopping! It's a minefield out there. Maybe I'll let my bra's rest for 48 hours to be sure they last even longer!

NB. I hope you are thankful I didn't inflict you with a photo of my bra! I did consider it. That card by the way, I think it's the funniest card I've ever been given - I giggle every time I look at it.

kids live here

Sometimes I'm a bit slow to catch on. Some fellow bloggers have been sharing their 'kids live here' images for yonks. It's been on my must-do list for months.

I love everything about this photography challenge. It makes me look at the mess my kids make in a whole other light. A positive light. Children are such productive little beings, aren't they? At our house, there's always a project underway in one room or another, often several at once.  I can't imagine how sterile my home would feel without their imprints. It would be very tidy and clean, no doubt of that.

One day I'll miss treading on textas strewn across the carpet, the sound of Lego being sucked up the vacuum cleaner and toothpaste smears on the bathroom sink. Looking back at photos like these will rekindle the memories and sweeten my day.

Even looking at them now makes my heart sing: I have kids - How lucky am I!
