I've been exploring old Norfolk homes and museums of late. I don't know
about you, but I adore old things. I wish 'old things' could talk, can
you imagine the story they could tell us? I've always felt I was born
into the wrong era. I'm certain life in a Jane Austen novel would have
suited me well. But the reality is, for most from this era, life didn't
revolve around tea parties, grand balls and time spent painting
watercolours in pretty gardens! It's easy to romanticize the past,
isn't it! A hundred years ago (and less), life for the housewife was
far from glamorous, in fact I'd say it was back breakingly hard! So as
much as I admire the good ole days, I'm rather thankful for electric
irons and automatic washing machines and despite the enticing smell and
feel of the old Box Brownie, I'm rather enamored with my fancy modern
camera!

my nanna is 94 and had six children with my pop who for the most part travelled the country cutting cane. ive oftened talked to her about the differences from then and now and how it was to mother her children back then. the mind boggles! I think I can safely say that ive never had a hard day as a mum in comparison!
lovely pics x
Love these photos! I always thought I was born in the wrong era as well, watching shows like Downton Abbey doesn't help to shake me from my little daydream! Although, I'd be more likely to be an Anna than a Lady Mary (or even Lady Edith! - Sybil was my favourite though!)
Indeed! I like the idea of taking the best from the past and mixing it in with our modern lives. Making jam and laundry liquid from scratch, using cloth napkins, making do and mending, yes indeed. Washing all the laundry by hand in boiling water and passing it through the wringer on wash day? I'll keep my front loader and just hand wash the woollens thanks!! :)
my dad was 84 when he died and he had many tales to tell of living in the back to back victorian cottages with the loo in the courtyard shared and the tin baths that everybody would share the water of...dad first then mum then kids! another world!! love this xxxx
