friday favourite [our family]

Here's my favourite photo taken this week.

I'd love it if you'd share yours too...just add a link to your Friday Favourite in the comments below!

super moon

Armed with a beanie and a tripod, Ben braved the cold last Sunday night to photograph the Super Moon! Considering we don't have a massive lens, I think he has managed to capture the moon's beautiful markings pretty well. Did you see it from your place?

Stills [that actually span the week]

I'm not very good at capturing a weeks worth of stills. Mine tend to be "weekend stills". Though somehow this week I managed to get a little camera action most days!

So here's a recap..
1. It's no wonder our locally grown carrots taste so good - there's carrot love in the air!
2. Harry's bedroom floor - it pretty much looks like this 24/7
3. Iron Chef meets Spics and Specs...oh we had a laugh (So, does the blonde wig suit me?)
4. Ben's pavlova test!
5. Rescue Ben....a late night VRA call meant trekking out to meet a passing container ship requiring assistance with a very sick sailor...yep, on the sea....at night....in ghastly weather!!!!! You can imagine my nerves that night!
6. Funny faces - loose/missing/growing teeth - it all kind of grosses me out
7. Hours of felt fun - it's been Till's toy of choice lately

Friday Favourite [quiet and productive]

post haste? an exercise in patience!

I recently ordered something from an online retailer. A few weeks later this email showed up in my inbox...

I am writing in regard to an order you placed with us almost two weeks ago. I have been attempting to contact you but your phone number in invalid. Your packages have been returned to us twice by Star Track couriers, as they say the address is invalid. I am reluctant to send it out a third time if it is not going to reach you again. If we can send it to a residential or business address I think that would be best.

this happens all the time

As does this telephone conversation...

"...No, a courier can not come to Norfolk Island (not unless they own scuba gear, a hovercraft or have gills and fins)...it's hard not to be really sarcastic

"...Yes we do have a NSW postcode, I know, that does make it confusing"

"...yes, we are a long way away....1600 km's from Australia...in the middle of the South Pacific"

"...No, it won't arrive in the next few days...that's OK, we are used to waiting weeks and months"

"...Yes...it can be sent via air mail....but ONLY if you send it as express post"

"...Yes we do have a phone...you need to ring the international code first"

"...that's right, no one here has a house letter box....yes we all have a post box at the post office"

then we get quizzed about island life...

"...oh yes, we love living here" snail mail and all!

If a parcel travels by ship, expect it to take at least six weeks to arrive. It can take up to 12 weeks if the seas are rough. The majority of our mail travels by ship! Sure, we receive air mail too (letters, postcards, bills)...but only parcels posted in an Express Post bag have the privilege of a plane ride (with some exceptions). Expected time of arrival? Hmmmm...anywhere between 5 and 14 days. No Express Post bag? Sorry...the ship it is (I hope you don't get sea sick).

Slow mail? Yes! But we don't mind, truly. It's all part and parcel (hee hee) of living on a small remote island.

Sunday Stills [the domestic edition]

Remember Operation MUST Kill Germs?

I think most of these photos are self explanatory, except perhaps the last one! That's Till perfecting her Downward Dog. Looking good little yogi babe. Namaste.

We had a perfectly perfect Sunday. I hope you did too x

PS And in case you are wondering...I do take great pleasure in photographing the ordinary...
pegs and vacuum cleaner hoses are interesting I think.

full bellies, sunshine, long weekends and...germs

Cute huh? This is what happens when you feast at a Bounty Day picnic (we're talking first, second and maybe third helpings here, plus dessert) and then you sit around in the warm sun afterwards, allowing everything to slowly work its magic. This photo taken last weekend really should have been my Friday Favourite...but I didn't remember it until now!

We are having yet another long weekend! Because of Bounty weekend, Norfolk is celebrating a belated Queens b'day...I hope she doesn't mind. Two looong weekends in a row - I could get used to this. Lucky for me I've a few extra days up my sleeve as I'm just emerging from the sick tunnel. I won't give away too many details...but let's just say, I spent SO much time in the bathroom over the past 48 hours that I considered setting up camp in there! Now I'm crossing fingers and toes that no one else here falls victim to my pathogens!!!! When I get up tomorrow (with renewed energy I'm expecting...as I finally ate something tonight) it will be Operation Germ Kill!

Baunti Dieh 2013

Every year on June 8, Norfolk Island celebrates Bounty Day. More than 150 years ago the entire population of Pitcairn Island relocated to Norfolk Island on the understanding that Queen Victoria had given the Island to them as their new home.

The day begins with an re-enactment of the landing of The Pitcairners down at Kingston Pier. The Pitcairn descendents are greeted by the Administrator and his wife, and from the pier they march to the cenotaph where they lay wreaths in remembrance of those who fought and died in the wars. From the cenotaph, the march continues on to the cemetery where beautiful traditional hymns are sung. Following that, the procession moves to Government House for morning tea and a judging of the best dressed family. Afterwards, families and friends gather in various places around the island for a decadent picnic feast!  Finally, everyone returns home to prepare for the Bounty Ball, at which there is a ballroom dancing competition in further celebration of Bounty Day.

Norfolk Island traditions and customs are alive and well. Their language, crafts and life-style all enviable. It makes me wish I had some Norfolk DNA. Whilst my family cannot dress up and join the march, every year we have been invited to the picnic celebrations and we also participate in the Bounty Ball.  Bounty Day is a wonderful day all round; for participants and observers alike.

The Leibster Award

The Liebster Award is given to up and coming bloggers who have less than 200 followers. So, what is a Liebster?  The meaning: Liebster is German and means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. Isn't that sweet? Blogging is about building a community and it's a great way to connect with other bloggers and help spread the word about newer bloggers/blogs.

A HUGE thank you to Elizabeth of Lilybett and Boy who nominated Norfolk Exposure for the Leibster Award! So what's this all about? Well there is no real award as such (so nothing to frame and hang on the wall above my computer - oh dang). Of course there are no official judges, and from what I can determine through Googling, the rules have varied slightly over time. There's no website with an official team to congratulate you or hand over an over-sized cheque.  The Leibster Award is pretty much a chain letter; a blogger to blogger award where you nominate other bloggers. If you receive the award, you can i) accept it and/or ii) pass it along or iii) do nothing at all! I'm into the idea of sharing some blog love so I'm happy to take part!

Here are the rules for receiving this award:

1. Each person must post 11 things about themselves.
2. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you plus...
3. Create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
4. Choose 11 people to nominate and link them in your post.
5. Go to their page and tell them.
6. No tag backs!

so here we go...

Eleven Random Facts About Me:

1. I hated olives...until I fell pregnant...and then I craved them. I continue to love them!
2. On my 30th b'day I happened to be dining in the same restaurant as Jimeoin - my friends asked him if we could have a photo together - not only did Jimeoin oblige, he scooped me up in his arms!
3. A late bloomer, I didn't lose my first tooth until I was in grade two
4. I rarely shave my legs in winter! Yes I've got cave-girl style
5. Call me old fashioned, but I refuse to own a mobile phone
6. I hope to visit Alaska and Canada one day
7. I could live on ham and cheese toasties!
8. Three of my photos were selected to appear here recently
9. As a child I was sure I'd grow up, get married and have 5 children!
10. Litter bugs drive me crazy! What's so hard about putting rubbish in the bin?

Questions Elizabeth asked me:

1. How do you normally find new blogs to read?

I seem to stumble onto new blogs in a few different ways. Occasionally via Facebook links, or sometimes I follow a comment profile and at other times I follow a bloggers suggested links.

2. What's your preferred leisure activity when you have a spare hour to yourself?

Sleep. Seriously, I'm a bear. I'll always put my hand up for an afternoon siesta. I love reading, watching movies and yoga too. I like sewing also, but I'm never truly happy with anything I make!

3. What's your guilty pleasure?

Ooo sugar because I mainly eat sugar free.  Now and then I indulge in something sweet. And if it's in the pantry, I have my hand in the crystallized ginger jar when no one is looking!

4. When and why did you start blogging?

I started my blog two years ago as a way to share our new island life with friends and family back home. My lovely sister first introduced me to blogs, both as reader and a writer herself. She inspired me!

5. What's in your handbag?

Um. I don't have one. I never have. I don't even know what I'd put in one. Is that odd?

6. Name your three desert island albums or movies.

Oh POP goes my heart....yep, the movie Music and Lyrics...I love it. Any Jane Austen movies...although...I could be tempted to bop Mr Darcey on the head after a few hundred viewings! As for music? I really don't know if I can narrow it down. I have pretty eclectic taste; everything from show tunes to Jamiroquai!

7. What philosophy do you live by?

I have this on my fridge...

 8. Are you doing your dream job? If not, what is it?

Yes I am. From a very young age I was certain I'd grow up to be a school teacher. But if I could have been, well you know, anything, I would have loved to become a ballerina!

9. Favourite item of clothing?

Probably jeans - they are so versatile. I'm a dag...really. Trackie pants and pj's are my home clothes of choice. I'm happiest when my clothing is comfy. I'm a 'ditch-the-bra-as-soon-as-I-get-home' kinda gal.

10. Favourite apps or programs for blogging/photography?

I use Feedly and Pulse for following blogs on my android. Personally I think Feedly is better than Bloglovin. I follow some great photography blogs for inspiration. I haven't yet delved into Pinterest or Instagram because I already spend so much time reading blogs. I've got to draw the line somewhere.

11. Describe your last 'aha' or 'forehead slap' moment.

You know, I've only just worked out I can respond to blog comments via email. Dur.

Questions for the Nominees

1. Imagine a historical figure had written a blog. Whose would you have followed? Why?

So, will you pay it forward? Go on...

Stills: A Weekly Collection

One - I picked up my knitting for the first time in eighteen months. Yes, basic stitches...very much a novice. I will probably stick to scarves for the rest of my knitting life - anything else scares the pa-tooty out of me.

Two - I bought my first ever pair of boots!

Three - Don't be thinking only toddlers break out the pots and pans! Till and Harry fired up the kitchen band yesterday.

Four/Five* - The clothes drying/sorting room aka our loungeroom! It has looked like this for days. We just can't seem to get our washing under control.

Six - They shared a creme brulee.....poo poo to ice-cream and topping. My kids have expensive, sophisticated taste (bugger).

Seven - The kitchen was a disaster (it was one of those days).  We arrived home from school and Till insisted on washing up! It must have been the look of total despair on my face.

*When Ben saw photo No 4 he said "what's that"? and I said "Lie under the clothes horse and look up"...gee, dur!!

Friday Favourite: First time at Pony Club

Weekly Stills - Down at Kingston Pier

After the typical Saturday morning rounds (fruit and veg market, bakery etc) we drove down to the pier for a looky-see. It was bleak, blustery and kinda ominous (hence Miss Till taking refuge in the car most of the time we were there), but I was loving the crazy wildness of it all and skittered around with my camera; half because I needed to keep warm but also because I'd just been to yoga and had energy to burn! As our jackets billowed and hair whipped our faces, Ben and I laughed and reminded each other how very likely our up and coming trip to NZ might be exactly like this! Windy and freezing but exciting and invigorating - hopefully with snow. Bring it on!

Here's the run-down...

1. Harry asked if he could turn the key in the ignition
2. the boys are looking for me hee hee.... "I'm up here lads!"
3. flaky paint and weathered stone - texture abundance
4. the pier itself
5. the Pier Store Museum - treasures behold
6. kids in the old haunted mill (well it feels spooky to me)
7. follow the grey line to the end of the pier
8. looking towards the old gaol, mill on the left
9. safe and snug - Miss Matilda didn't wish to do battle with the gale

I know...that's quite a list, with waaaay too many photos. I can assure you, I culled heaps! So many things to capture in one place - and I still see something new every time we explore this historic spot. If history is your thing then Norfolk Island should definitely be on your 'I must visit' list.

once again, linking up with Emily
